The Dark Knight: the #1 movie to top the box office list

July 29, 2008

ghfg

The Dark Knight which has been shown in theaters for a mere 2 weeks only has already the cumulative gross of $313,781,677, making it’s way to the top of the box office list. i think the major reason why it succeed is that because Heath Ledger was the one who played as Joker. this is his last movie and i can understand everybody’s wanting to see it.

i had no inkling of wanting to see it but due to the gross sales, it just proves that it is a good movie. and to think that heath ledger is also one of my favorite actors. so i think im gonna watch it. teehee.

LaBeouf booked for DUI after late-night wreck

July 28, 2008

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shia LaBeouf was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving Sunday after an early morning wreck in which the "Indiana Jones" star injured his hand and knee, authorities said.

LaBeouf was trying to make a left turn at a West Hollywood intersection around 3 a.m. when his pickup collided with another vehicle, rolling the truck over, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Wolf said.

"It was immediately apparent to officers responding on the scene that LaBeouf was intoxicated and he was subsequently placed under arrest," Wolf said.

Wolf said LaBeouf was booked then released for misdemeanor DUI. The 22-year-old actor was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and was being treated for injuries to his left hand and a knee, as well as a minor head injury, Wolf said.

A woman passenger in LaBeouf’s truck and the driver of the other vehicle were not seriously injured. Wolf did not know the identities of the woman or the other driver.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation, Wolf said. Two attorneys listed for LaBeouf did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press on Sunday.

Melissa Kates, a publicist for the actor, said LaBeouf underwent hand surgery and plans to return to work within a month. She declined further comment.

The accident occurred when LaBeouf, who was headed northbound on La Brea Avenue, tried to turn onto Fountain Avenue, Wolf said. The intersection is the location of "High Voltage," the tattoo parlor where the TLC reality show "LA Ink" is filmed.

LaBeouf starred in last year’s summer smash hit "Transformers," and this year appears opposite Harrison Ford in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."

LaBeouf has had previous brushes with the law, but until now they’d been relatively harmless — to the degree that they only served to reinforce his image as a Hollywood good guy with an edge.

A drunken confrontation with guards at a Walgreens in Chicago late last year led to misdemeanor criminal trespassing charges. Arresting police in that incident noted that LaBeouf was "very courteous and polite," and the charge was dropped because the drug store didn’t want to pursue the matter.

In a lighthearted retelling of the incident to David Letterman on the "Late Show," LaBeouf said: "Drinking and driving is one thing, but drinking and shopping … it’s just as bad."

LaBeouf was separately cited in February for smoking where he shouldn’t in Burbank, but a judge later dismissed the charge.

Britney Spears Nabs MTV Nom for “Piece of Me”

hjkh

Los Angeles (E! Online) - Will Britney Spears make a return to MTV’s Video Music Awards in September?

The music network has just announced that the well-on-her-way-to-a-comeback pop princess is a nominee for Best Female Video for "Piece of Me." (See the other nominees below the jump.)

The show—hosted by British comedian Russell Brand—airs live from Hollywood on Sept. 7.

Lest you forget—but how could you, really?—Spears’ performance of "Gimme More" at last year’s kudosfest was a jaw-dropping disaster. The big question now is, will Brit try to redeem herself by performing this time around?

Can Katrina surpass Vilma?

July 24, 2008

fghfg

An Herculean challenge, any way you look at it.

In one of the two films she has just signed up with for OctoArts Films, Katrina Halili will play the title role of Miss X, not quite a remake of the 1980 sex-drama starring Vilma Santos as a showcase dancer in Amsterdam’s Red Light district, a follow-up to her radically image-changing turn in Celso Ad. Castillo’s Burlesk Queen. Vilma won a Best Actress award for it in that year’s Metro Filmfest but the awards were taken back, remember (prompting nitpickers to dismiss the Gabi ng Parangal as a Bawian Awards)?

"It’s scary," admitted Katrina, No. 3 in this year’s Philippines’ 100 Sexiest Women of the FHM, after placing No. 1 (this year, Marian Rivera is "it") for two consecutive years. "I wasn’t born yet when that movie was shown," added Katrina, 22, "but I’d like to watch it if I get hold of a DVD copy."

Unfortunately, said direk Gil Portes (who’s again at the helm of Miss X, subtitled Ang Filipino Porno Queen ng Amsterdam), "I myself don’t have a copy. Trigon Films owns the rights to the film. The new Miss X will be somewhat different from the original and it will be even bolder and sexier," adding in jest, "that’s why I got (former FHM editor) Eric Ramos, a porno writer, to write the script."

Asked if he has asked Vilma to do a cameo, direk Gil said, "yes, but she’s still reading the script."

Funfare texted Vilma to verify and she texted back, "Nope, I’m not doing a cameo. Wala akong nakakausap tungkol dyan."

Miss X circa 2008 will be in keeping with the times ("Warning:" Watch out for even more shocking scenes!), also to be shot in Amsterdam and slated to be released in February next year. It’s not definite yet who will play Katrina’s leading man (it was Mark Gil in the Vilma version) and some people are suggesting, "Why not Mark’s son Sid Lucero who is a good actor like his dad?"

But before that, Katrina will shoot One Night Only, the other film she’s doing for OctoArts, written and directed by Joey Javier Reyes as an official entry to this December’s Metro Filmfest.

"One Night Only is hard to describe," said direk Joey. "The whole story happens in 12 hours where several characters cross paths. Among the other stars are Roxanne Guinoo and Angelica Panganiban, together with Diether Ocampo, Joross Gamboa and Ricky Davao as Katrina’s congressman-lover."

According to OctoArts producer Orly Ilacad, the two projects have been on the launching pad for quite a while, waiting only for the right star.

"Katrina is perfect for both films," said Orly.

After all, besides Marian Rivera, Katrina is one of the very few truly most in-demand young stars today, not only for TV roles but also for commercials, magazine covers and, that’s it, movies. And to think that she placed only No. 8 in the StarStruck search a few years back! "My lucky number is 8," smiled Katrina who, before playing bida in the ongoing GMA soap Magdusa Ka, handily established herself as a bewitching kontrabida (in the same league as Cherie Gil, Dina Bonnevie, Eula Valdez, Jean Garcia and Princess Punzalan) in previous soaps (Majika and Marimar, among them.

"Enough already," said Katrina who, two weeks ago, graced the Fil-Am Friendship Day celebration in Virginia Beach, USA, where Pinoy TV had a booth, together with Francis Magalona and Marvin Agustin. "Mas masarap siempre maging bida."

The question now is: Can Katrina surpass, or just even equal, Vilma’s memorable performance in Miss X?

That remains to be seen.

enjoying the moment

i played in the rain, and it felt so so good..

usually when it rains, i stay away from it. i look for a place where i can stay warm and dry. but last night, i have this urge to just enjoy it and feel free to play with it. i lingered the moment even though it was just a short walk. i felt the coldness, the wetness. i felt that i was  a human again. i still was able to feel. i am a human being after all. i looked up the dark sky and felt the rain in my face. oh, how it felt so good. they were like a blessing from God to shower me and make me feel that there is hope and blessing.

the rain last night washed all my uncertainties away. there is still hope. i know.

uber sad..

dfgdf

this past few weeks, my happiness was uncontainable. i smile, i giggle, i whistle because deep inside im happy. i kept on wishing that it would go on like that.

but as everybody say, nothing is permanent and i know too that what happiness i felt that time was really bound to end up anytime. and now it has halted. even though i expected it already and i’ve been through it a lot of times, it still caught me off guard.

now i’m left to stand alone in the stage, left in the pedestal, left to perform in a dance that was supposed to be danced by partners.

what’s a girl to do in times like this of her life? am i to cry? but im already so tired. am i to just stay, hold back and just let everyhting happen? but i want to take some action. i am a woman of action, i don’t just let everything pass by without doing everything i can do to save it. but im just so so tired. i don’t want to fight anymore. my heart cries out that i should go on with it. but my mind and body is so bugbog na.

what to do? halp.

Gretchen: It’s hard to be a mistress!

July 16, 2008

fgh

For three days during the shoot, Gretchen Barretto lived the life of Margarita, the character she’s playing in an episode of Charo Santos-Concio’s long-running and top-rating drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya which is moving to a Saturday (from Friday) timeslot this weekend (July 19, after Pinoy Dream Academy) on ABS-CBN.

In the episode directed by Nuel Naval from a teleplay by Mel del Rosario, Margarita is a frustrated wife of a down-on-his-luck husband (Tonton Gutierrez), forced to be the mistress of a mayor (Phillip Salvador). It’s Gretchen’s return to MMK (which is celebrating its 17th anniversary) after 15 years and she had a hand in choosing the story and her leading men.

"It’s hard to be a mistress," admitted Gretchen with a suppressed smile, speaking about her three-day reel life and not exactly real life. "Ang tawag natin sa Tagalog sa mga katulad ni Margarita ay kabit. Ang pangit pakinggan, di ba? It’s not easy to be a kabit; hindi madali, hindi masaya," adding with a serious tone, "many people think that if you are a kabit, you are a bad woman, na masama ka nang babae. People shouldn’t be judgmental; they should be more understanding. There are many reasons why some women choose to be a mistress. Money, for example. Nagiging kabit sila dahil sa kailangan nila ng pera and in the process they forget to put heart into the relationship."

Gretchen is sure that many women can relate to Margarita.

"When they watch Maalaala, people will realize why some women become mistresses," assured Gretchen who’s so convincing in her portrayal that, you wonder, did she draw from, ehem, real life (you know, observing women she knows who are in a similar situation)?

"Ah, basta," she blurted out, laughing (as if the joke was on somebody else), "ayokong maging katulad ni Margarita, ayokong maging kabit!"

In real life, Gretchen is the beloved "queen" of Tonyboy Cojuangco’s heart (no matter if some people say otherwise) and home (in a posh Makati subdivision), still hoping to march down the aisle in a wedding put "on hold" indefinitely by Tonyboy. In the case of Margarita, what bugs her life is mainly financial; in that of Gretchen, "emotional - and legal - insecurity."

The MMK people sent Gretchen three scripts and she chose the Margarita story without neither second thoughts nor reservation.

Asked why, Gretchen broke into her characteristic, naughty laughter, "Hulaan n’yo kung bakit."

She chose Tonton as her husband because "he’s perfect for the role" and Phillip as the mayor because "he’s macho at…ayokong sabihing matanda." In some of her scenes with Phillip, Gretchen wears a short hairdo that makes her look like Cristina Decena, Phillip’s ex-girlfriend (now entangled in an ugly fight waged on national television with former Caloocan City Mayor Rey Malonzo, a "plot" which should be another ideal material for MMK).

In a scene showing her nagging Tonton to find a job, Gretchen demands, "Saan tayo kukuha ng pambili ng pagkain?" According to Gretchen, she found it hard to put her heart into that scene. "Sa tunay na buhay kasi, ang itinatanong ko ay hindi kung saan kukuha ng pambili ng pagkain kundi kung saan ako magsha-shopping. Hahahaha!"

Come to think of it, putting into consideration Phillip’s role as a philandering husband, Gretchen was asked during the presscon the other day how she would handle such a situation.

Breaking into a smile, she said, "I can’t relate to it…I wouldn’t know how to handle it. I don’t have a husband."

Incidentally, Gretchen didn’t make any further comment on the reported feud between her sister Claudine and Angel Locsin, reported to have had a verbal clash at a beauty parlor.

Taking no sides, Gretchen said that she was sad that such an incident happened, leaving Claudine to sort our her own mess.

"Kaya ni Claudine ‘yan!"

‘Not guilty!’

A gallery of champions

sdf

It was only a few months ago when Rachelle Ann Go unleashed the rocker in her with the album Rachelle Ann Rocks Live. Public reaction to the collection of well-loved rock classics and the singing champion’s sudden and I must say risky change of pace proved to be excellent. Her version of White Lion’s Honestly instantly became a huge hit. Her second single Aerosmith’s Cryin’ is now fast climbing up. To top it all there are more single materials in the CD.

So it is only to be expected that the Search for a Star grand champion and silver prize winner at the Asia New Singer Competition of the Eighth Shanghai Music Festival would decide to take more rock risks as a follow-up. This is the Rachelle Ann Rocks Live DVD from Viva Concert Series. This is the very same performance heard in the CD, which was recorded live at 19 East in Parañaque. This time around though, there are visuals of the show directed by Robert Quebral plus behind the scenes footage, music videos of her other hits, a photo gallery from Rachelle Ann’s private album and additional songs. These are After the Rain a big hit for The Nelsons and To Be With You from Mr. Big.

Silver prize winner at the Asia New Singer Competition at The Ninth Shanghai Asia Music Festival and Search for a Star in a Million finalist Jimmy Marquez is very happy and proud about all the positive feedback that his new CD By My Side, has been getting from listeners. He feels that he has finally found his niche and the all-original package produced by Christian de Walden has just the kind of classy, top quality, radio-friendly sound singers aspire for.

The first single Why is Love Amazing sets the sexy, make out mood. This is picked up later by Touch Me Tonight. The sound also goes sweet and easy with the title cut and the boy band influenced Save Every Minute and Everytime You Pass Me By, which should make great singles. Why it even powers up some dance grooves with By My Side, My Imaginary Love, Pretty Face and Passion.

Star for a Night runner-up Mark Bautista also has a new album. Titled I’ll Be the One and also produced by De Walden, the CD shows Mark at his best vocally. Though known earlier for singing dramatic ballads, he now takes the lighter pop route. I guess it is thanks to the success of his all-covers collection, Every Now and Then, that there is now more confidence in his approach to the all new materials. And great news, I’ll Be the One introduces Mark as a songwriter. The album includes Why Can’t We, his very first composition co-written with Vito and Alberto Mastrofrancesco and Lori Barth.

The first single out is Eternally. The other titles included are Sana’y Dinggin Mo, a new original by the L.A.-based Filipino songwriter Jimmy Borja, Too Slow, Stuck in My Heart Now, Take a Chance, Everytime I Close My Eyes, Love And Affection, I’ll Be the One, Just Look at Me, I Don’t Wanna Say Goodbye, Somehow I Knew and Don’t Tell Me About Heartaches which features his favorite singing partner, Sarah Geronimo.

Jimmy and Mark are joining Sarah later this year for a tour of Europe that will start in beautiful Monaco. And as for Sarah, the Star for a Night champ continues her full schedule for the rest of the year. First off, there is a new edition of her latest album Taking Flight. This one includes her version of the old favorite A Very Special Love, the theme from the movie of the same title, which stars Sarah with John Lloyd Cruz. Incidentally, the Taking Flight CD has garnered three Awit nominations, Song of the Year for Ikaw, Female Pop Vocal Performance also for Ikaw and the much-coveted Album of the Year Award.

Set for an August date in the stores is her new De Walden album. Remember, their team-up did remarkably well with Becoming, which had a big hit in the Jimmy Borja song I Still Believe in Loving You. Simply titled Just Me Sarah, it has an all original line-up including I’ll Be There, her duet with Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys. Then to cap, 2008, Sarah will release her first ever Christmas album, produced and arranged by Ryan Cayabyab.
